Word problems

We finished a math workbook last week. I looked through my shelf to see what we might start next and pulled out a (very short!) 1st grade level workbook on word problems. These problems are things like, 'Ann has 3 baseballs. Tom has 5 baseballs. How many baseballs do they have in all?' Sayer is having no problems with this. She fills in the blanks that they provide so she can see that it is 3 + 5 and figures the answer.

She has had a bit if difficulty trying to figure out what she is expected to do when the problem is phrased as, 'Tom has 5 goldfish. Ann has 3 goldfish. How many more goldfish does Tome have?' She understands that it's a subtraction problem when it asks how many are left, but not necessarily when they want to know how many MORE one person has than another. She is improving, though :)
